1927, The Long Count; 100,000 spectators fill Chicago's Soldier Field for the rematch of Jack Dempsey and defending heavy-weight boxing champ Gene Tunney. In the seventh round. Dempsey floored the chap, but hovered around Tunney instead of returning toward the corner. At the count of five, Dempsey backed off, but the referee restarted his count at one, allowing Tunney enough time to recover his senses and get up. After 10 rounds, Tunney won the contest by unanimous decision to retain the ditle. Dempsey protested the long count to boxing authorities, but the original decision stood.

1922, "Murder of the decade:" The Reverend Edward Wheeler Hall and his church choir leader Mrs. James Mills are found murdered at an abandoned farm in New Brunswick, NJ. The case, drenched in suggestions of adultery and innuendo, was the tabloid story of the decade. After no killer was found, a tabloid in 1926 got the case reopened with spurious evidence implicating the reverend's wife and two brothers . The sensational trial of the three was full of melodrama and histrionics. including an incapacitated witness ("The pig Woman") carried into the courtroom on a stretcher (and who proved surprisingly animated during testimony), but the defendants were found innocent.

1924, Another "trial of the Century", Nathatn Leopold Jr., 19, and Richard Loeb, 18, who kidnapped and murdered a 14-year-old boy on May 22 for sport, are sentenced to life in prison. A pair of Leopold's eyeglasses, dropped in the dark near the murder scene, led to their arrest. The case was notable for the cold lack of remorse by the young killers and the fact that they came from privileged backgrounds and excelled in academics. Also notable as an early, successful use of the "insanity defecne". Brilliant lawyering by Clarence Darrow fgot them a life sentence instead of the electric chair.

1921, A "bathing beauty" pageant is held in Atlantic City N.J. an event that would soon be known as the Miss American Pageant. With the invention the year before of the Jantzen elasticised one piece bating suit, more comfortable and revealing swimwear was becoming popular. Though not the first bathing beauty contest, this event was the first to feature women in skintight suits with knees exposed. Reporters and photographers played up the event with sensational coverage, and it was the impetus for the swimsuit show craze of the twenties.
